Palpitations

My resting heart rate is 98 BPM
the cardiologist says that’s a little fast.
Heart disease doesn’t run in my family
Lovesick hearts do, but it’s easier to
read the results of my EKG than it is
to read the feelings written on my face.
Saying hello is a sprint,
a conversation’s a triathlon,
but what I want is to hear your heart
beating too—Peacefully? or Frantically like mine?
A stethoscope would do the job—
My head against your chest
would do it better.
